Patience is a Virtue?
I have said to myself for years that patience is a virtue but now I am learning that this virtue has more value than I ever imagined. When coupled with tenacity almost anything can be achieved.
What if the secret to balance in life and work is patience?
We need to stop expecting instant answers for:
- Striving and feeling exhausted
- Uncertainty & things we can’t control
- Wishing we had or were more
So we can:
- Accept what is, right now
- Be serene with who we are
- Get our goals and still feel full of vitality
Why Patience Matters
I used to collect egg timers at one stage in my life which is quite ironic given one of my most erratic virtues is patience. The patience to watch sand going through an egg timer eluded me so I am sure that I was attracted to them as a result. Something I couldn’t grasp!
I have so much patience for other people (of course as a coach that’s a given) but for achieving my own goals and solving my own problems I just want it done. In the past I’ve been unwilling to take the time to sit with:
-
- Frustration
- Fear (failure, pain)
- Anger
- Sadness
- Disappointment
- Shame
This inability to sit with these emotions created more pressure to just keep striving and driving for the next thing. That created a lack of balance in my life and deep unhappiness despite the many things I could have been enjoying.
I wasn’t ready to enjoy the learning experience that goes with doing things we have never done before or still find challenging.
Chill
So many clients are like me. Impatient with themselves and expecting to be able to do everything without practising.
Chill out there – be a little patient and have faith in yourself to get where you want to go. Maybe just not right this minute…
